The launch of Open Call for ISOCARP Members aims to foster a productive dialogue and knowledge exchange with the ISOCARP membership. In this view, ISOCARP Institute is seeking motivated members of ISOCARP to collaborate and support the development of upcoming activities across the Institute’s three pillars of Research, Academy and Practice. ISOCARP Institute is committed to a more inclusive ISOCARP ecosystem where all players within can come together, collaborate and develop fruitful exchanges.

1) ISOCARP Institute X Strelka KB – A1

On behalf of Strelka KB – Moscow, ISOCARP Institute is looking for experienced urban designers and urban planners to work on projects in Russia, CIS, Middle and Far East in the field of regional, territorial, and urban development, including Masterplanning.

Successful candidates should have strong design skills, at least 5 years of working experience in the field of urban planning or urban design (qualifications in the field of environmental and housing are preferable), be fluent in spoken English, and be available for long-term working travels (more than 3 months). Candidates should be available starting from January 2022. Contracts will be signed with Strelka KB.

2) ISOCARP Institute X Think City Institute

ISOCARP Institute and thinkcity Institute have agreed to develop together international capacity building programmes in the field of sustainable urban development and related areas as opportunities for local governments, private developers and other relevant stakeholders to share practical experiences and concrete lessons. Online courses (starting January 2022) will focus on the topics of spatial inequality and poverty reduction, prosperity of cities and regions, climate action and improved urban environment, and good governance for sustainable urban development. ISOCARP Institute is looking for experienced urban planners with at least 10 years working and teaching experience in the above-mentioned topics. Candidates will receive an allowance.

3) ISOCARP Institute X GIZ Egypt

ISOCARP Institute and GIZ Egypt are currently working on a possible Placemaking workshop with citizens and young local professionals on site in the Greater Cairo, as well as a Capacity building / UPAT workshop on place-led development and stakeholder engagement to take place also in Greater Cairo, both to be implemented early 2022. ISOCARP Institute is looking for young planning professionals, preferably from Middle East region, and experienced urban planners with at least 10 years working and teaching experience in place-led development and stakeholder engagement. Candidates will receive an allowance.

4) ISOCARP Institute X Dubai Future Academy

ISOCARP Institute and Dubai Future Academy (https://www.dubaifuture.ae) have agreed to develop an online capacity-building training on the topic of “Shaping Humanity’s urban future beyond 2030”. The aim of the course is to understand the future of the urban humanity, its evolution and how the future beyond 2030 looks like, which challenges and pathways shaping urban futures will dominate in the next decades, and how the relationship between human and technology will evolve. Four core courses will focus on the topics of Prospective thinking of Environmental Future, Human Future, New Paradigms and urban living conditions, and Urban Management towards 2071. ISOCARP Institute is looking for highly experienced urban planners with at least 20 years working and teaching experience in the above-mentioned topics. The courses will take place on December 13th and 14th, 2021. Candidacies to be sent before December 3rd, 2021. The candidates should be able to envision the future of the urban humanity beyond 2030. Candidates will receive an allowance.

5) ISOCARP Institute X Strelka KB – A2

ISOCARP Institute has been mandated by Strelka KB Moscow to implement a Review of their latest Publications on Master Planning in Russia. The Publications consist in 3 Books on Master Planning Approach, Methodology, Instruments and Tools. The Reviewers will have to read and analyze the publications, review the outputs, and produce an integrated report to be delivered by End of January 2022. ISOCARP Institute is looking for highly experienced urban planners with at least 10 years working experience in publication review and critical analysis related to urban and master planning. The work will be carried during December 2021 and January 2022. Candidates will receive an allowance.

The ISOCARP Institute is the research spin-off of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), based in The Hague, the Netherlands. With over five decades of accumulated knowledge and expertise in urban and regional planning, ISOCARP as a non-profit organisation with individual and institutional members in 85 countries worldwide, initiated the Institute as a Center for Urban Excellence – a think-tank empowering individuals, organisations, and institutions to achieve better human settlements. The Institute’s core function is to conduct research and promote knowledge transfer, offer advice and short-term consultancy services, as well as design, and deliver capacity development and continuing education programmes. The institute is involved in several EU research projects, offers technical assistance globally, as well as engaged in capacity development projects with other international partners.  

Job Profile

We are seeking for a full-time staff member interested in urban issues to assist us in delivering our projects. The project manager will support and assist us in the management of our multiple projects, both, within the EU and at international level.  To apply for this position, you need to have at least 3-4 years of experience with at least 2 years in EU/international project administration. 

The ideal candidate is a motivated, independent and creative individual who is able to balance different tasks and responsibilities effectively and collaborate with the ISOCARP Institute team.

Responsibilities 

Support the implementation of our projects

Managing the general project implementation of our Horizon 2020 projects 

  • Facilitate and coordinate communication plans with partners and clients, act as a liaison between the organisation, the public and the media through different (digital) channels.   
  • Supporting in the administration of projects financially. Experience in EU budgeting accountancy and financing is a strong asset. 

Capacity Building

Support the delivery of capacity building activities, in terms of coordination and content creation, including training modules, animation of online and in-person trainings and workshops; 

  • Have a good knowledge of transition governance processes. Hands-on experience with local level governments or stakeholder engagement is an added value; 
  • Project Proposal
  • Assisting in the acquisition and research projects (i.e. Horizon 2020 etc.) including: stakeholder engagement, desk research, compilation of relevant research materials, writing proposals, and drafting budgets; 
  • Communicate and actively engage with high-level institutional partners. 
  • In addition, you:
  • Bring action and hands-on mentality and enjoy working in a young, dynamic, and international environment; 
  • Are a team player, with the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders; 
  • Can work independently as well as in teams; 
  • Can coordinate several projects simultaneously; 
  • Assists in the acquisition and research of projects, including: stakeholder engagement, desk research, compilation of relevant research materials, and proposal writing. 
  • Have experience in managing and coordinating an international team. 

  • Requirements

  • You hold a master’s degree in social sciences, geography, urban studies, public administration, environmental sciences, or other discipline with a strong interest in the urban spectrum;  
     
    You have minimum 3 – 4 years relevant working experience with at least 2 years in EU or international project administration.  
     
    You are autonomous and proactive in building and setting up consortia, project ideas etc. 
     
    You have documentation skills and data management; 
     
    You are curious, open-minded, and experienced in the communication with high-level institutional partners; 
     
    You have excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written. Other European languages are an asset;

We are seeking for a full-time Communication and Graphic Design Officer in capturing the impact of the organization for all internal and external communications. The Communication and Graphic Design Officer will support and assist us in the management of our multiple projects, with exposure in social media, website management tasks, infographics and other multimedia graphics.  To apply for this position, you need to have very good knowledge of WordPress and graphic design programmes – Adobe Creative Suite programmes such as, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Premier, etc.

Responsibilities 

Communication and Dissemination

  • Supporting the general project implementation specially on the management of communication and dissemination materials; 
  • Assist the management, programmes and operation teams in formalizing their presentation, designing handouts and booklets; 
  • Preparing eye-catching and engaging visual materials, handbooks, infographics and manuals; 
  • Assisting in both managing the ISOCARP Institute and ISOCARP Society in organizing and updating content libraries/repositories; 
  • Update and disseminate informative materials and recent events across our project social media channels – Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. 

Graphic Design

  • Design and implement all types of graphic design work including reports, publications, posters, brochures, flyers, logos, banners, and multi-media creatives; 
  • Design promotional materials for disseminating within the organization and throughout the country as well as external stakeholders; 
  • Ensure project branding, style, and tone are implemented across all channels; 
  • Translate complicated technical terms into compelling and communicative visualisations.
  • Website Management
  • Plan, implement, manage, monitor and upgrade the organisation’s and the project’s websites; 
  • Update appropriate website content aligned to the organization’s strategy and events; 
  • Improve user experience of the websites regularly. 
  • In addition, you:

  • A highly motivated candidate with a (recent) Master’s degree in Communication Sciences, Graphic Design or other relevant discipline; Comms Internships and volunteering jobs during the studies are highly valued; 

    Passion for learning about urban development, sustainability and citizen engagement; 

    You are creative and talented in web design, infographics, and visual materials: knowledge of Adobe software, MS Office and WordPress is a MUST; 

    Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript;  

    You are autonomous and proactive in building and setting up (new) operational processes from scratch;

SSPCR 2022: call for sessions and side events now open

On behalf of the JUSTNature project team and Eurac Research, ISOCARP Institute would like to share the ‘The Call for Proposals for the 2022 edition of the Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cities and Regions (SSPCR 2022) is now open. From today until the 15th of November 2021, it will be possible to send proposals for sessions. The deadline for the submission of proposals for side events is set on the 10th of January 2022.

SSPCR has come to its fourth edition and it is now recognised as one of the key platforms where researchers and professionals can discuss solutions to the issues of today and rethink the way we live. The 2019 edition gathered more than 200 participants from 38 countries, with 143 oral presentations and 19 posters.

SSPCR 2022 will take place from the 18th to 22nd of July 2022 in Bolzano (Italy), a place in the heart of the Dolomites where the traditions of the past intertwine with the challenges of the future.

SSPCR 2022 warmly welcomes contributions from different research fields, including urban and regional planning, environmental and social sciences, economics, transportation, engineering and energy-related studies, computer science and geomantic, as well as from the professional community.

ISOCARP Institute’s Special Session on Innovative Solutions for Climate Resilient Cities and Communities at 57th ISOCARP World Planning Congress

On Wednesday, November 10th , ISOCARP Institute organized a special session about innovative solutions for climate-resilient cities and communities in connection with the 57th ISOCARP World Planning Congress. The Congress took place in Doha, Qatar, and brought together professional planners, architects, researchers, and policy-makers from around the world.  

Particularly, this session integrated into “Track 4: Resilience and Adaptability” of the Congress and discusses key elements regarding the shaping of strategies to enhance climate resilience in cities. Insights will be drawn from the ongoing Horizon 2020 EU projects in which the Institute is involved: +CityxChange, VARCITIES, and JUSTNature. 

The session targeted the general audience of the Congress and welcomed professional planners, practitioners, researchers, Young Professional Planners (YPPs) and government officials. 

The format of the session combined a panel discussion with an interactive exercise: a World Café. This promoted cross-learning and knowledge transfer between participants and speakers. 

The speakers discussed innovative solutions for climate resilience and provided insights from relevant EU projects. Participants were encouraged to reflect on opportunities and challenges faced by these projects and collaboratively apply a problem-solving approach.  

The session focused on the advancements driving forward the transition to low-carbon and resilient cities and communities. It considered innovations such as positive energy blocks and nature-based solutions, but also important elements to achieve successful long-term implementation, such as public engagement, political acceptance, and social justice.
